Guatemala tourism grows 1.2% in first seven months of 2026

Guatemala recorded 1,915,874 tourists between January and July 2026, representing a 1.2% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (Inguat) reported that July alone saw approximately 288,700 visitors, a 2% rise from the previous year.

Growth was driven by market diversification strategies. El Salvador saw a 5% increase in visitors during July, contributing an estimated $21.6 million in economic impact during the Fiestas Agostinas period. The United States remains the second largest market, with 73,593 visitors in July, maintaining stability despite rising airline costs and reduced air capacity.

Other notable year-on-year increases in July included Australia (50%), Mexico (39%), Panama (30%), Nicaragua (26%), Colombia (25%), and the Netherlands (20%). These figures align with a 2024 government plan to position Guatemala as a sustainable destination in Central America by attracting high-spending travelers.
