Guatemala transport sector pressures government over fuel subsidy

On July 24, transport unions in Guatemala staged protests demanding action on soaring fuel prices, just hours before the government announced a temporary diesel and gasoline subsidy reallocation of Q3.48 million. The proposal remains stalled in Congress, where partisan disagreement has prevented approval.

In response to the fuel cost surge, the Cámara de Transportistas Urbanos e Interurbanos de Guatemala (Catug) raised bus fares in the capital from Q5 to Q7, a 40 % increase that directly impacts thousands of daily commuters. The Municipality of Guatemala also authorized a temporary fare ceiling, allowing a maximum of Q6 when diesel is Q30‑Q49 per gallon and Q7 when it exceeds Q50, aiming to keep services running and curb arbitrary charges. Transport representative Walter Montiel warned that the fare hike is inevitable given the broader financial pressures on the sector.

The rising fares have already added a significant burden to users who rely on multiple bus trips for work, study, and daily activities, highlighting the immediate human impact of the unresolved subsidy debate.
