Guatemalan deputies fail to expedite election of new Comptroller General

Legislators in Guatemala attempted to expedite the election of a new Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC), but efforts to move the vote to Tuesday, September 29, were unsuccessful.

Opposition blocs, including Cabal and Vamos, had reportedly sought consensus to appoint Jorge Giovanni Castellanos Gudiel, the current Sub-Comptroller of Expenditure Quality, to the position. While some sources indicated that negotiations involving deputies such as Luis Aguirre and Allan Rodríguez were underway to secure the necessary votes for an immediate election, other legislative sources reported that the attempt to bypass the scheduled October 6 or October 8 sessions failed.

If elected, Castellanos Gudiel is expected to appoint José Domingo Conde Juárez to a sub-comptroller position. However, Conde Juárez has previously faced scrutiny during the Postulation Commission process due to his involvement with the University of San Carlos of Guatemala (Usac) Supreme University Council, raising concerns regarding his potential independence within the CGC.
