Guatemala mourns assassinated anti-corruption lawyer Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa

Thousands of citizens, family members, and government officials gathered in Guatemala City to hold funeral services for Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa, a prominent anti-corruption lawyer and former prosecutor. Solórzano Foppa, 43, was assassinated on Saturday, October 17, 2026, while playing football at a public sports complex in the Campo Marte area. Despite being under police protection at the time of the attack, he was shot multiple times in front of one of his sons.

The deceased held significant roles in the country’s legal and fiscal institutions, having served as a prosecutor in the Public Ministry and as the superintendent of the Tax Administration Superintendency (SAT). He was widely recognized for his efforts to investigate high-profile corruption and links between political figures and criminal gangs such as Barrio 18 and MS-13.

During the funeral ceremonies, which included indigenous Mayan rituals and tributes from the Municipal Firefighters—an institution to which he had dedicated ten years of service—attendees demanded justice. President Bernardo Arévalo has pledged to use all necessary resources to clarify the crime and punish those responsible. While authorities have conducted ballistic analysis and witness interviews, two initial suspects were released due to lack of evidence, and no perpetrators have been detained.
