Guayaquil launches major drainage cleaning operation

The Guayaquil Municipality has launched an extensive cleaning operation of its drainage system as part of the Pre-Winter Plan 2026-2027. The initiative aims to prepare the city's infrastructure for the upcoming rainy season.

Executed through EMAPAG EP and the concessionaire Interagua, the project involves cleaning 265 channels, ducts, and sewers, along with approximately 30,000 sumps. The operation will cover over 147 kilometers of storm infrastructure and is expected to remove more than 175,000 cubic meters of sediment, weeds, and debris.

A total of USD 2.2 million has been allocated for these preventive measures. Specialized work includes using professional divers and high-pressure water pumps to remove solidified mud from ducts near the Metrovía Río Daule Terminal, a process expected to take two months.
