Aquiles Álvarez undergoes emergency surgery in Guayaquil

Aquiles Álvarez, the Mayor of Guayaquil, underwent emergency surgery on the night of Friday, October 2, 2026, due to gallbladder complications. He was transferred from the Cárcel del Encuentro prison in Santa Elena to the Clínica Alcívar in Guayaquil under heavy police and military escort.

The transfer, which was initially planned to be aerial, was instead conducted by land because adverse weather conditions prevented flight operations. The National Service for the Integral Attention of Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI) confirmed that the medical evaluation at the prison indicated a need for specialized care that could only be provided in Guayaquil.

Following the procedure, which began around 21:30, Álvarez's legal counsel, Julio César Cueva, reported that the surgery was successful and the mayor is currently in the postoperative area. Medical teams have indicated that he is evolving favorably, though he remains under continuous monitoring. The mayor is expected to remain under observation for at least 48 hours.
