Guayaquil Municipality implements cleanliness awareness and enforcement
The Municipality of Guayaquil has launched a dual strategy to improve urban cleanliness through public awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement of waste disposal regulations.
As part of a civic culture initiative, the city has utilized traffic lights at strategic locations to display messages encouraging residents to avoid littering. The campaign aims to reduce urban waste that often obstructs sewers and drainage systems during rainfall. Complementary cleaning operations were also conducted in key areas, including Avenida 9 de Octubre, Malecón Simón Bolívar, and the vicinity of the Mercado Central.
Simultaneously, municipal authorities are increasing inspections to ensure compliance with waste collection schedules. In the Sauces IV sector, a resident was formally notified for disposing of trash during unauthorized morning hours, despite the area having a designated nighttime collection schedule. Under current municipal ordinances, improper waste disposal can result in fines ranging from USD 96.40 to USD 602.50. The Direction of Cantonal Cleaning, Markets, and Special Services (DACMSE) continues to conduct regular patrols to monitor compliance and mitigate public health risks.
