Guayaquil cultural, civic, and environmental initiatives

Overview

Guayaquil has introduced several local initiatives focused on culture, innovation, and civic responsibility. Early efforts included the “Aquí lee Guayaquil” event, a family-oriented reading program, alongside the third “Ruta de la Innovación 2026,” which integrated art, science, and technology.

Efforts have since expanded into environmental education and heritage preservation. Consorcio Urvaseo launched a campaign for schools and colleges using music and interactive activities to teach students about proper waste disposal and collection schedules. To support urban history, the Guayaquil Mayor’s Office implemented a heritage ordinance providing financial incentives, such as exemptions from public road occupation fees, to encourage the restoration of historic structures like the Casa Tola facade and the Furgón building.

Furthering the city’s circular economy goals, the “Ruta del Reciclaje” program, led by Circular EP, has introduced free workshops for residents. These sessions, held at locations such as CAMI 29 and Oriente, teach participants how to transform waste into decorative or utilitarian items like earrings, paintings, and notebooks. These workshops aim to foster environmental responsibility while providing homemakers with technical skills to launch small home-based businesses.

Recent environmental efforts have also targeted electronic waste. Through the “¡Ponte DESPI!” campaign, driven by GTREES, approximately 2,900 students and their families are participating in the collection of unused household items, such as old televisions and printers. These materials are collected at schools and transferred to authorized environmental managers for classification and recycling.

To further improve urban cleanliness, the Municipality has launched a dual strategy of public awareness and enforcement. This includes using traffic lights to display messages against littering to prevent sewer obstructions. Simultaneously, authorities are increasing inspections to ensure compliance with collection schedules, with improper disposal potentially resulting in fines ranging from USD 96.40 to USD 602.50.
