Guerrero, Mexico records 56% drop in homicides after joint security strategy
A coordinated security initiative between the state government of Guerrero, led by Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda, and the federal government of Mexico has resulted in a 56 percent reduction in intentional homicides. Daily homicides fell from an average of 6.6 in October 2024 to 2.9 in May 2026. The decline was reported during a national crime‑incidence briefing chaired by President Claudia Sheinbaum and highlighted the role of joint operations, intelligence work, arrests of violent actors, and dismantling of criminal structures. Officials credited the sustained effort of inter‑agency coordination tables, increased police presence, and preventive actions for restoring peace and improving safety for families in Guerrero.
