Mexico homicide decline continues, security councils expand

Overview

The national intentional‑homicide rate kept falling through July 2026, with the daily average down from 86.9 to 45.4 cases – a 48 % drop since September 2024, the lowest level in 11 years. President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated that the decline reflects the four‑pillar National Security Strategy, which combines intelligence work, National Guard deployments, poverty‑reduction programmes and coordinated prosecutorial action.

State‑level figures continued to improve: Quintana Roo recorded a 60.1 % reduction, San Luis Potosí an 81.7 % cut, Morelos cut its daily average from 3.7 to 1.9 cases, and the State of Mexico reported a 58 % drop over the past 21 months. Additional data released in July 2026 showed similar reductions in Zacatecas (61.8 %) and Baja California (20.9 %). The State of Mexico, which earlier reported a 58 % decline, recorded a 38 % drop in the most recent six‑month window, confirming the continued downward trend. Security operations have led to more than 59,500 high‑impact arrests, the seizure of about 31,000 firearms, nearly 500 tonnes of drugs and the dismantling of roughly 2,600 clandestine labs.

Local initiatives reinforced the national effort. In Morelos, Governor Margarita González Saravia chaired a “Cuautla Peace Fair” that offered free health, education, employment and legal services, underscoring the emphasis on community‑focused prevention. In Guanajuato, a weapon‑exchange campaign launched in Salamanca encouraged residents to surrender firearms voluntarily.

Public perception of safety improved, with Cancun’s insecurity rating falling from 81 % to 74.9 %. Over 1,100 businesses joined a protection network to curb extortion. Critics noted that new crime classifications could affect figures, but officials stressed that coordinated federal, state and municipal actions remain central to curbing violent crime.

Security councils kept expanding, formalising municipal peace tables, mobile justice caravans and joint surveillance networks across several states.
