Guidonia Montecelio reports second West Nile Virus case

A second case of West Nile Virus has been confirmed in Guidonia Montecelio, Italy. Mayor Mauro Lombardo announced that the infected individual is a resident of the Setteville Nord-Marco Simone district, following a previous case in Villanova where a patient was hospitalized in Tivoli.

In response, the municipality has ordered intensive mosquito control measures within a 200-meter radius of the affected homes. A second cycle of anti-larvicidal treatment is scheduled to begin across the entire municipality. Local authorities have issued an ordinance requesting that citizens and businesses prevent the accumulation of stagnant water to assist public health efforts.

The virus is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites after the pathogen replicates within the insect's salivary glands. This biological process allows specific mosquito species to act as efficient vectors for arboviruses, including West Nile, Dengue, and Zika.
