Guinea Army Reaffirms Loyalty to President Mamadi Doumbouya Amid Speculation

General Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, chief of the General Staff of the Guinean armed forces, announced on state television that the army’s “constant fidelity” and “unshakeable loyalty” remain with President Mamadi Doumbouya, the Republic’s institutions and the Guinean people. The declaration followed weeks of rumors about the president’s health and concerns of possible splits within the security apparatus.

Doumbouya, who secured 86.72% of the vote in the December 2025 presidential election and was sworn in January 2026, presided over a September 2025 constitutional referendum that extended the presidential term to seven years and permitted military members to stand as candidates. The pledge arrives in a regional context of coups in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, ongoing food insecurity affecting over a million Guineans, and recent state actions to tighten control over mining licences such as the Simandou project. The army’s statement seeks to reassure supporters, deter opponents, and signal stability to foreign partners.
