Guinea Doumbouya vacation and military loyalty

In early August 2026 President Mamadi Doumbouya travelled to Greece for a private vacation. Immediately after his departure, the chief of staff of the Guinean armed forces, General Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, announced on state television that the army’s “faithful and unwavering loyalty” remained with the president, the Republic’s institutions and the Guinean people. The declaration was meant to allay rumors about the president’s health and to deter speculation of splits within the security apparatus.

The loyalty pledge follows Doumbouya’s landslide re‑election in December 2025, a constitutional referendum that extended the presidential term to seven years and allowed military candidates, and comes amid a regional wave of coups in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, as well as domestic challenges such as food insecurity and recent moves to tighten control over mining licences. The army’s statements aim to reassure citizens, signal stability to foreign partners, and reinforce the regime’s grip on power.
