Guinea-Bissau military blocks former President Embaló's return
The military government of Guinea-Bissau has officially barred former President Umaro Sissoco Embaló from returning to the country. The High Command stated that the necessary security conditions to guarantee his safe return are not currently met, citing concerns regarding national security, public order, and social stability.
Embaló, who has been in exile in Morocco since the military takeover in November 2025, had planned to return on October 4. He has expressed his intention to run in the upcoming presidential and legislative elections, which the transitional authorities have scheduled for December 6, 2026.
While Embaló has called for calm and urged judicial authorities to treat his candidacy with impartiality, the military junta has maintained restrictions on political gatherings and demonstrations. The situation remains tense as the country navigates its political transition toward a return to civilian rule.
