Guinea-Bissau transition leader dismisses top judicial officials

Guinea-Bissau’s transitional president, General Horta Inta-a, has dismissed the Attorney General of the Republic, Amadu Tijane Baldé, and the President of the Court of Auditors, Gamal Abel Cassama. The decrees, signed on October 19, appoint Mário Ialá as the new Attorney General and Armando Sumba as the new President of the Court of Auditors.

These dismissals are part of a broader restructuring of state institutions following the military coup on November 26, 2025. Since the takeover by the High Military Command, which suspended the Constitution and dissolved the National People's Assembly, the transitional government has carried out successive removals of figures linked to former President Umaro Sissoco Embaló. Recent changes also included the dismissal of the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Fisheries.

Observers suggest these judicial changes are a decisive step toward consolidating transitional control over the judiciary. This follows the dissolution of the Superior Council of the Magistracy and the temporary closure of the National School of Magistracy, granting expanded powers to the Attorney General's office.
