Guinea’s national exams face fraud accusations, teacher convictions and mixed results

The Guinean Ministry of National Education released the 2026 BEPC results, showing a national pass rate of 58.96 % among 136,639 candidates, with 78,222 declared successful. The gender gap was small, and the franc‑Arabic option recorded the highest success rates.

The National Education Union (SNE) condemned the same exam cycle as riddled with systemic fraud, accusing education officials and close associates of the minister of leaking exam papers, bribing supervisors and mismanaging the exam budget. Union leader Pépé Balamou warned that “these exams were marked by massive fraud across the board.” He also criticised the “militarisation” of exam handling and delayed payments that encourage corrupt practices.

In Forécariah, a Guinean court sentenced about a dozen teachers and a fake candidate for participation in exam fraud. Penalties included suspended prison sentences, fines ranging from one to three million Guinean francs, and confiscation of seized items. The convicted candidates were barred from the 2026 baccalaureate session.
