Guinea implements administrative reform elevating 11 sub-prefectures

Guinea has implemented a significant administrative reorganization through a decree by President Mamadi Doumbouya, elevating eleven sub-prefectures to the status of prefectures. This reform aims to bring administration closer to the population and foster regional development.

In Doko, a former sub-prefecture of Siguiri with an estimated population of 269,000, the new status has been met with local enthusiasm. Local officials, including Doko's first vice-mayor Mohamed Lamine Makagui, expressed hope that the change will lead to essential infrastructure development and economic opportunities for youth.

While the move is widely viewed as a step toward progress, some political leaders have noted potential challenges. Amadou Secteur Barry, president of the Union des Patriotes pour le Développement de la Guinée (UPDG), stated that while the creation of new regions and prefectures is salutary for development, it may trigger temporary local demands and administrative friction as various districts seek similar upgrades.
