Guinea initiates reconstruction of Ignace Deen University Hospital

The Guinean Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has announced the total evacuation of the Ignace Deen University Hospital (CHU) to facilitate a major reconstruction and modernization project. Starting August 19, 2026, the facility will no longer admit new hospitalizations or scheduled interventions. Activities will be temporarily transferred to Camp Camayenne to ensure the continuity of care while the historic establishment is rebuilt.

This initiative is part of a broader government effort to modernize national hospital infrastructure, improve care quality, and enhance the capacity to treat complex pathologies within Guinea to reduce the need for medical evacuations abroad. Camp Camayenne previously served as the temporary site for Donka University Hospital during its own renovation process.

Donka University Hospital has recently completed a four-year transformation period following its reopening. This overhaul included structural reforms in governance, the implementation of specialized risk management committees, and the introduction of digital tools such as the SAGE accounting system. These changes aimed to improve patient pathways, administrative traceability, and overall medical coordination.
