Reconstruction of Ignace Deen University Hospital

Overview

The Guinean Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has initiated a major reconstruction and modernization project for the 120-year-old Ignace Deen University Hospital (CHU) in Conakry. Following instructions from President Mamadi Doumbouya, the project aims to transform the facility into a “sub-regional center of excellence” featuring modern technical platforms and a new oncology center.

To facilitate this, the hospital is undergoing a total evacuation to ensure the continuity of care while the infrastructure is rebuilt. Starting August 19, 2026, the hospital ceased new hospitalizations and scheduled interventions. Health Minister Khaïté Sall confirmed that 25 hospital services have been relocated, with medical activities being transferred to Camp Camayenne and the Sino-Guinean Hospital of Kipé.

As of August 20, 2026, 84 patients requiring immediate attention have been transferred to other facilities, including the Donka National Hospital and the Sino-Guinean Friendship Hospital. The military hospital at Camayenne Camp is being adapted to accommodate transferred services within a month. The state is covering all costs related to patient transfers and equipment relocation.

The reconstruction process is expected to take approximately four years, with construction slated to begin before the end of 2026. While the long-term goal is to reduce the need for expensive medical evacuations abroad, the total financial cost of the project has not yet been disclosed. Although military engineering equipment has arrived on-site for imminent demolition, some patients have reported distress regarding the suddenness of the evacuation process.
