Guinea President Mamadi Doumbouya dismisses 173 soldiers for desertion

Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya has issued a decree dismissing 173 military personnel from the armed forces, navy, and gendarmerie for desertion. Notable among those dismissed is Commander Michel Lamah of the Special Forces Group, who played a prominent role in the 2021 coup that brought Doumbouya to power.

The Ministry of Defense, through General Mamadou Aliou Sow, clarified that desertion is defined by specific unauthorized absences, such as six days during peacetime or three days while abroad. The dismissals are part of an ongoing effort to reorganize security institutions and enforce military discipline.

In separate political developments, Doumbouya has awarded honorary distinctions to 81 former members of the National Transition Council (CNT) for their service. This includes elevating Dr. Dansa Kourouma to the rank of Grand Officer of the National Order of Kolatier. Additionally, the government has announced a recruitment drive targeting engineers and doctors over the age of 35 to strengthen the military's operational capacities.
