Guinea sets regional and senatorial election dates

Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya has scheduled regional council elections for November 29 and senatorial elections for December 20. These votes are intended to complete the establishment of institutions under the new Constitution as part of the country's transition toward constitutional order.

The senatorial election will determine two-thirds of the Senate members, while the remaining third will be appointed by the President. These elections follow legislative elections held in May, where the presidential coalition secured over 80% of parliamentary seats despite boycotts from major opposition parties like the UFDG and RPG.

However, recent administrative restructuring has raised concerns regarding electoral participation. While the number of administrative regions has increased to nine and prefectures have risen from 33 to 44, certain new entities may be excluded from the upcoming votes. Specifically, the newly created regions of Siguiri and Beyla currently lack the legal status required to function as decentralized local authorities, and eleven newly established prefectures are not expected to secure Senate seats during the December 20 vote.
