Guinean Central Bank Governor suspends union activities

Karamo Kaba, the Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Guinea (BCRG), has banned all union activities within the institution and suspended the 12 members of the union bureau for two months. This administrative action follows a labor court decision on September 1, 2026, which ordered the provisional suspension of the bank's union delegation.

The conflict reportedly stems from a dispute regarding the distribution of school bonuses intended for employees' children. Tensions previously escalated in late August when three union leaders were acquitted by the Kaloum Court of First Instance following charges of contempt and violence involving the governor's bodyguard.

In response, major labor organizations, including the Union Syndicale des Travailleurs de Guinée (USTG) and the Fédération Syndicale Autonome des Banques, Assurances et Microfinances de Guinée (FESABAG), have convened emergency meetings. Aboubacar Soumah, Secretary General of the SLECG and a member of the USTG, stated that while they intend to petition the National Council for Social Dialogue (CNDS) and Prime Minister Bah Oury, the option of a strike remains on the table if the decision is not rescinded.
