Gujarat dams overflow amid heavy rains, triggering high alerts and flooding in Surat

Heavy monsoon rains have caused a rapid rise in water levels across Gujarat's reservoirs. Fifteen dams have reached full capacity and are spilling over, while 22 others are under high alert and eight are on alert mode. The surge has led to flooding in low‑lying areas of Surat, prompting the municipal commissioner, M. Nagraj, to order the closure of factories for two days and to keep schools and colleges closed on August 1. Authorities have also begun evacuating residents from vulnerable neighborhoods and have urged the public to follow safety instructions.

The state’s water management officials say the increased inflow improves overall water availability for the coming months, but they continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any uncontrolled releases.
