Gujarat High Court upholds death penalty for 38 Indian Mujahideen operatives in Ahmedabad 2008 blasts
The Gujarat High Court affirmed the death sentences of 38 Indian Mujahideen operatives and upheld life imprisonment for 11 additional convicts linked to the 21 bomb blasts that struck Ahmedabad on July 26, 2008. The attacks killed 56 people, injured more than 200 and even targeted hospitals where victims were being treated.
The court cited the "humongous" conspiracy, the intent to spread widespread terror and the large number of casualties as reasons for confirming the capital punishment. It also ordered the state government to pay Rs 10 lakh to each family of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh to those grievously injured by March 30 2027. Among the convicted were Safdar Nagori, a former leader of the banned Student Islamic Movement of India, and associates from eleven Indian states.
