Ahmedabad 2008 bombings death sentences

Overview

In early July 2026 the Gujarat High Court reaffirmed the special court’s 2022 judgment on the 2008 Ahmedabad bombings. The court upheld death sentences for 38 members of the Indian Mujahideen and confirmed life imprisonment for 11 others who were convicted for the coordinated attacks that killed 56 people and injured more than 200. The judgment also ordered the state to pay compensation to victims’ families – ₹10 lakh for each deceased, ₹5 lakh for those grievously injured and ₹1 lakh for minor injuries. The court cited the scale of the conspiracy and the intent to spread terror as reasons for the capital punishment. The convicted retain the right to appeal to the Supreme Court. A follow‑up report a week later reiterated these details, naming former Student Islamic Movement of India leader Safdar Nagori among the sentenced and emphasizing the “zero‑mercy” stance of the state.
