Gujarat High Court upholds death sentences for 38 in 2008 Ahmedabad bombings
The Gujarat High Court on 7 July 2026 confirmed the special court’s 2022 judgment that sentenced 38 members of the Indian Mujahideen to death and 11 to life imprisonment for the 21 coordinated bomb blasts in Ahmedabad on 26 July 2008. The attacks killed 56 people and injured more than 200, targeting buses, markets and hospitals.
The court also ordered compensation of ₹10 lakh for each family of the deceased, ₹5 lakh for those grievously injured and ₹1 lakh for others with minor injuries. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi hailed the verdict as a historic, zero‑mercy decision and said it sends a strong message against terrorism. The convicted convicts retain the right to appeal to the Supreme Court.
