Gulf Coast Flood Threat Escalates During Memorial Day Weekend
A Level 2 flash‑flood risk has been issued for large parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast as a deep plume of tropical moisture moves northward. The outlook covers Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, parts of Oklahoma and coastal areas from San Antonio to New Orleans, leaving about 20 million Americans exposed to possible flooding.
Forecasters expect 3‑5 inches of rain across the region through Friday, with localized totals of 5‑8 inches or more. Soils are already saturated after above‑average May rains, raising the chance that additional downpours will trigger flash floods in city streets and low‑lying neighborhoods. Flood Watches remain in effect through Monday, and authorities warn that the persistent soggy pattern could continue into early next week.
