2026 Texas Gulf Coast flooding and heat dome
Overview
Late‑May thunderstorms triggered flash‑flood alerts across central Texas, the Hill Country and the Gulf Coast, followed by a June heat‑domed ridge that pushed temperatures above 95 °F in Dallas and the low‑90s in Houston. Tropical Storm Arthur in mid‑June dumped up to 20 inches of rain, caused tornadoes, power outages and dozens of deaths, and prompted emergency declarations in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and neighboring states. By late June the storm’s remnants lingered as extreme heat persisted. In mid‑July, the flooding threat resurfaced when the National Weather Service placed a flash‑flood watch over San Angelo and ten surrounding West Central Texas counties, warning of 2‑5 inches of rain with isolated totals exceeding 8 inches and rain rates of 1.5‑2.5 inches per hour. The Weather Prediction Center noted that heavy rain from a Gulf‑derived moisture surge and a stalled frontal boundary continued to affect at least 17 states, putting up to 87 million people at marginal to slight flood risk and activating warnings for roughly 2.5 million Texans. On July 13, heavy downpours drenched South and Central Texas, delivering up to a foot of rain in some locales and prompting flash‑flood warnings for millions. Governor Greg Abbott declared a disaster for 59 counties, mobilizing the National Guard and state resources for rescues in Uvalde, Medina, Kerr and the Hill Country. Forecasters warned an additional 10‑20 inches could fall across the worst‑hit zones, raising the risk of catastrophic flooding along the U.S. 90 corridor, Edwards Plateau, Rio Grande Plains and the San Antonio‑Austin area, affecting more than six million people. By July 15, rainfall totals of 10‑12 inches (with isolated 16‑inch reports) continued to generate widespread flash flooding, road washouts on Highways 83 and 281, and a semi‑trailer swept off a bridge near Uvalde.
