Taraba State: Gunmen attack Binnari village, killing dozens

Armed gunmen on motorcycles launched a coordinated attack on Binnari village in the Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, Nigeria, on Friday, October 23, 2026. The assault, which reportedly began shortly after Friday Muslim prayers, lasted several hours and involved approximately 50 motorcycles carrying two men each.

While the Taraba State Police Command initially confirmed 10 fatalities, death tolls from other sources vary significantly. Local residents and survivors reported at least 20 deaths, while Amnesty International stated that community members confirmed 40 deaths. Other reports from state police and local sources suggest the toll may have risen to 37 or even 50, with some victims reportedly drowning while attempting to flee across rivers.

The attackers looted cash, food supplies, and motorcycles, and set residential buildings and business premises on fire. Many residents fled into nearby bushes or neighboring communities, and several people remain missing. Authorities suspect the assailants may have crossed into Taraba from neighboring Plateau State. In response, joint security teams including the Nigerian Army and police tactical units have been deployed to the area to restore calm and search for the perpetrators.
