Armed banditry in Taraba State, Nigeria

Overview

On October 23, 2026, armed gunmen on approximately 50 motorcycles launched a coordinated attack on Binnari village in the Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State. The assault occurred following Friday Muslim prayers and during the community’s weekly market day, involving the looting of cash, food, and motorcycles, as well as the burning of homes and businesses.

While initial police reports indicated 10 fatalities, subsequent recovery efforts have significantly increased the death toll. By October 26, Taraba State police spokesperson Victor Mshelizah reported that at least 58 people had been killed after 15 additional bodies were recovered from surrounding bushes and a river. Amnesty International reported a death toll of 52. A large number of victims, including many women and children, reportedly drowned in a nearby river while attempting to flee the attackers; additionally, an overloaded canoe carrying evacuees reportedly capsized during the chaos.

Authorities suspect the assailants may have entered Taraba from neighboring Plateau State. In response, joint security teams comprising the Nigerian Army and police tactical units have been deployed to the region. The Taraba State government has also begun distributing relief materials to survivors and displaced families.
