Nigeria: Deadly armed attacks reported in Benue and Plateau states

Multiple deadly attacks by armed groups have been reported in Nigeria’s Benue and Plateau states. In Benue State, suspected attackers targeted several communities in the Ukum Local Government Area, including Mbaterem, Ayaba, Ikpur, Yina, Aboajio, and Ukpen. Reports indicate that many residents were killed and others injured during the early hours of Sunday. Local officials and lawmakers noted that the attacks appeared coordinated, with some reports citing at least 22 recovered bodies.

In Plateau State, violence has also escalated in the Mangu Local Government Area. An attack on the Bin-Per village, described by survivors as involving gunmen and machetes, reportedly left at least 24 people dead. Additionally, in the Jwak Maitumbi community, militia attacks resulted in several deaths and the destruction of approximately 45 residential structures, alongside the looting of valuables and destruction of crops.

Authorities in both states have responded to the violence. Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia commended security agencies for their prompt intervention and vowed continued support to protect residents. In Plateau, security forces have deployed to affected areas to prevent further escalation and investigate the incidents, which are often linked to long-standing communal tensions over land and resources.
