Anak Krakatau eruption triggers search for missing journalists in Sunda Strait

A joint search and rescue operation is underway in the Sunda Strait to locate five journalists and three crew members missing after their speedboat encountered difficulties near Mount Anak Krakatau. The search, which has entered its fourth day, involves over 300 personnel and multiple vessels, including Indonesian Navy warships such as KRI Leuser-924, KRI Kerambit-627, and KRI Lepu-861.

Search teams have expanded the operation area to approximately 3,243.7 square nautical miles, incorporating new sectors based on current wind and wave data. While a life jacket was discovered near Anyer, the whereabouts of the eight individuals remain unknown. Challenges to the mission include thick volcanic smoke hindering drone visibility and high waves ranging from 1 to 2 meters.

Separately, the eruption of Anak Krakatau has caused significant regional disruption. Ash clouds led to the temporary closure of several airports, including Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma, affecting nearly 3,000 flights and approximately 341,000 passengers. Authorities have also increased tsunami mitigation efforts in Banten and Lampung as a precaution against further volcanic activity.
