Gunung Merapi Climbing Remains Closed as Activity Stays at Alert Level III

The Balai Taman Nasional Gunung Merapi (BTNGM) confirmed that climbing on Gunung Merapi will stay closed indefinitely because the volcano remains at Level III (Siaga) with high eruptive activity. The agency warned of potential lava flows and hot ash clouds that could affect areas up to several kilometres from the summit, and reiterated that the New Selo trail and nearby soft‑trekking sites are within the danger zone.

Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X also urged tourists to postpone any ascent, noting that local residents understand the hazards but outsiders may not. He emphasized that updates from the Balai Penyelidikan dan Pengembangan Teknologi Kebencanaan Geologi (BPPTKG) should be followed for the latest safety information.
