Gunung Semeru erupts in Java, sending hot clouds 3.5 km down slopes

Gunung Semeru, the highest volcano on Java, erupted on Saturday morning at 06:21 WIB, producing an ash column about 1,000 m high and three distinct eruption phases. A hot pyroclastic cloud travelled up to 3.5 km toward the Besuk Kobokan river valley. Authorities reported no immediate damage to settlements, but the volcano remains at alert Level III. Residents are advised to stay at least 5 km from the summit, avoid the river corridor up to 13 km, and remain vigilant for ashfall, lahars and further hot‑cloud activity.
