Gunung Semeru volcano maintains Level III status after multiple eruptions
Gunung Semeru, the highest volcano on Java island, has experienced frequent eruptive activity throughout September 2026. On Monday, September 14, the volcano underwent three distinct eruptions in a single morning, with the highest ash column reaching approximately 1,000 meters above the peak.
Further activity continued into Tuesday, September 15, with multiple eruptions recorded during the early morning hours. These events were accompanied by strong rumbling sounds heard in residential areas on the slopes of the mountain. Despite the increased activity, local authorities from BPBD Lumajang reported that residents in the surrounding areas have been able to continue their daily activities normally.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) maintains the volcano at Level III (Siaga) status. Safety recommendations include avoiding all activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan within a 13 km radius of the peak. Additionally, residents are advised to stay at least 500 meters away from riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan due to the risk of lava flows and hot clouds, which could extend up to 17 km from the summit.
