Mount Semeru erupts with 1,300-meter ash column in East Java

Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java, Indonesia, experienced multiple eruptions on Sunday morning, September 27, 2026. The most significant eruption occurred at 05:55 WIB, sending an ash column approximately 1,300 meters above the Mahameru peak, reaching an altitude of 4,976 meters above sea level.

Between 00:21 and 06:22 WIB, the volcano erupted four times, with ash column heights varying between 500 and 1,300 meters. The ash was described as white to gray with moderate intensity, drifting toward the northeast. Seismographic data recorded a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of approximately 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

Mount Semeru remains at Alert Level III (Siaga). Authorities have issued safety recommendations, prohibiting all activities in the southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan river within a 13-kilometer radius of the peak. Additionally, residents are advised to stay at least 500 meters away from riverbanks due to the risk of hot cloud surges and volcanic mudflows (lahar), which could reach up to 17 kilometers from the peak. A 5-kilometer radius around the crater is also restricted due to the danger of ejected incandescent rocks.
