Guri Police arrest five for 74 million won voice phishing scam

Guri Police Station has apprehended five members of a voice phishing organization that defrauded victims of 74 million won by impersonating investigative authorities. The suspects allegedly contacted victims claiming their bank accounts were involved in criminal activities and instructed them to withdraw cash for delivery.

Investigation revealed that the group used a face-to-face method to collect the funds. A money changer within the group converted the stolen cash into cryptocurrency to transfer the proceeds to an overseas criminal organization.

Notably, the police discovered that the syndicate exploited the psychological vulnerability of previous victims by forcing them to act as cash collectors for new crimes. One apprehended individual was identified as a victim of a separate phishing incident and was released without charges after police determined they were being used as a tool for the crime.
