South Korean law enforcement crackdown on organized crime
Overview
South Korean authorities have conducted major operations targeting various forms of organized crime and illicit trade.
Law enforcement agencies dismantled several fraud syndicates involved in large-scale voice phishing and money laundering. In Daegu and Daejeon, 46 individuals were arrested for distributing illegal bank accounts used in phishing and gambling schemes. In Jeju, a syndicate was intercepted after defrauding 1,341 victims of 10.8 billion won using methods such as AI-generated images for scams and impersonating public institutions. Additionally, police apprehended a group coordinating with Chinese syndicates to launder 300 million won via cryptocurrency.
Separately, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and intellectual property authorities uncovered a ring smuggling approximately 100,000 counterfeit items from Shenzhen, China. The operation involved the illegal importation of counterfeit cosmetics, health supplements, and household goods, generating roughly 4.5 billion won in sales. Authorities seized approximately 18,000 items from a warehouse in Cheongju, noting that the counterfeit products lacked necessary functional ingredients and posed potential safety risks to consumers.
