Gus Salam Seeks PBNU Chairmanship to Promote Reconciliation

KH Abdussalam Shohib, known as Gus Salam, announced he will run for the position of Chairman of the Pengurus Besar Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) ahead of the organization’s 35th Muktamar scheduled for 1–5 August 2026. He said his decision follows a direct request from senior NU figure KH Nurul Huda Djazuli, who urged him to restore unity and strengthen the organization’s pesantren‑based values.

Gus Salam quoted the senior’s words: "Latar belakang kami berikhtiar untuk mengabdi di PBNU pada Muktamar akan datang, yang paling utama atas perintah KH Nurul Huda Djazuli." He also noted the senior’s concern: "Beliau sangat sedih … dan prihatin melihat adanya konflik terbuka di pengurus PBNU."

During meetings with regional PBNU leaders in Aceh, he outlined two main tasks: achieving comprehensive reconciliation within PBNU and ensuring governance remains rooted in traditional pesantren principles. Although he initially doubted his suitability, he received confirmation from the senior’s deputy. The Aceh regional PBNU branch said it will hear proposals from all candidates before deciding on support. The venue for the upcoming Muktamar has yet to be finalized.
