Colombia recognizes Israeli sovereignty over Golan Heights
The Colombian government, under newly inaugurated President Abelardo de la Espriella, has officially recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. This decision marks a significant shift in Colombia's foreign policy, reversing the stance of the previous administration led by Gustavo Petro, which had severed diplomatic ties with Israel.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Colombia cited the need to support Israel's national defense and security amidst persistent regional instability in the Middle East. The ministry emphasized that maintaining Israeli control over the strategic plateau is essential for protecting its citizens against external threats.
As part of this diplomatic rapprochement, Colombia has announced plans to restore full diplomatic relations and move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This move makes Colombia only the second nation, following the United States, to recognize Israel's claim to the territory. While the United Nations and most international bodies continue to view the Golan Heights as occupied Syrian territory, the Colombian government maintains that this recognition is a step toward seeking stable and lasting peace in the region.
