Gut microbiome diversity linked to acute stress response

New scientific research published in the journal Neurobiology of Stress suggests that gut microbiome diversity plays a critical role in how the body responds to acute stress.

According to Thomas Karner, a researcher at the University of Vienna, the gut and the brain maintain a continuous connection via the gut-brain axis. The microorganisms in the gut and the compounds they produce directly influence the body's stress response system.

Findings indicate that individuals with higher bacterial diversity exhibit higher cortisol levels following sudden stressful stimuli. Researchers suggest this indicates a more effective and immediate mobilization of the body to address challenges, rather than a failure to manage stress. This rapid response is considered an adaptive survival mechanism, though the study notes that the relationship is bidirectional, as stress itself can alter microbiome composition.
