Research on stress response and reduction mechanisms

Overview

Research from institutions in Austria has explored the physiological mechanisms of stress and methods for its reduction. Initial findings published in the journal Neurobiology of Stress indicate that gut microbiome diversity is linked to the body’s acute stress response via the gut-brain axis. Researchers noted that higher bacterial diversity is associated with higher cortisol levels following sudden stimuli, which may represent an adaptive survival mechanism for rapid mobilization.

Subsequent studies conducted by the Medical University of Vienna in the Wienerwald forest found that spending 20 minutes in a natural forest environment can significantly reduce stress. In a study of 66 healthy adults, the forest group showed a marked decrease in cortisol and a 12 percent reduction in negative emotions, whereas an urban control group experienced no change in stress levels. To manage immediate stress, experts recommend techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, humming, square breathing, and exposing the face to cold water to trigger the diving reflex.

Gut microbiome diversity linked to acute stress response

A study in Neurobiology of Stress reveals that high gut microbiome diversity enables a more effective and rapid physiological response to acute stress via the gut-brain axis.
