Gut microbiota research advances intestinal repair and ulcerative colitis treatments

Recent medical research and clinical trials are advancing new ways to manage intestinal health through the manipulation of gut microbiota.

Researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center have identified a specific bacterium, Akkermansia muciniphila (AKK), that plays a crucial role in intestinal recovery. Their preclinical study suggests that short-term fasting increases AKK levels, which in turn produces propionate. This metabolite triggers epigenetic changes that prepare intestinal cells for rapid regeneration following radiation therapy. This finding could lead to dietary or microbial strategies to mitigate the severe side effects of radiation used in treating abdominal cancers.

In a separate development, a Japanese startup, Metagen Therapeutics, has launched a clinical trial for a capsule-based fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) to treat ulcerative colitis. Developed in collaboration with Juntendo University, this oral medication aims to provide a less invasive alternative to traditional endoscopic administration. The trial, which is a joint effort between Japan and the US, will evaluate the safety and optimal dosage of these capsules, which contain freeze-dried bacteria derived from healthy donors, with the goal of seeking official pharmaceutical approval.
