Advancements in gut microbiome research

Overview

Scientific research into the gut microbiome is advancing new methods for managing intestinal health and disease. Initial developments focused on enhancing the protective capabilities of probiotics against Salmonella through genetic modification of Escherichia coli Nissle 1917. Additionally, studies into dietary fiber and indigestible plant proteins, referred to as ‘Prif’, demonstrated how these substances can prevent bacteria from consuming host proteins, thereby promoting beneficial metabolites over harmful phenols.

Subsequent research has expanded into intestinal repair and clinical applications. Studies at MD Anderson Cancer Center identified that the bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila (AKK) can trigger epigenetic changes that aid intestinal cell regeneration, potentially mitigating side effects from radiation therapy. Concurrently, clinical trials have commenced for a capsule-based fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) developed by Metagen Therapeutics and Juntendo University. This oral medication aims to provide a less invasive treatment for ulcerative colitis compared to traditional endoscopic methods.
