Guwahati rainfall triggers widespread flooding and deadly landslides

Heavy rainfall has caused significant disruption and fatalities across parts of India. In Guwahati, Assam, moderate rain led to widespread waterlogging, paralyzing traffic and inundating major roads in areas such as Hatigaon, Panjabari, and RG Baruah Road. Residents and commuters have criticized the city’s drainage infrastructure for its inability to manage even moderate precipitation.

The weather also triggered deadly landslides in the region. In Mathgharia, a landslide buried a house, killing three members of a family; only one child was rescued alive. A separate landslide in Satgaon resulted in the death of a 65-year-old woman. In response, government officials have pledged compensation for the victims and promised to relocate residents living in high-risk hillside areas to safer locations.
