Rain-triggered disasters in India

Overview

Heavy rainfall and subsequent geological disasters have caused multiple fatalities and injuries across different regions in India.

In Arunachal Pradesh, a cloudburst and flash flood in the Dibang Valley struck the Pasu Pani Army Camp, sweeping away shelters and leaving five Army personnel missing. Simultaneously, a landslide at a road construction site in the Upper Subansiri district killed four workers.

In Guwahati, Assam, heavy rainfall has led to widespread waterlogging and deadly landslides. Moderate rain has paralyzed traffic and inundated major roads in areas including Hatigaon, Panjabari, and RG Baruah Road, prompting residents to criticize the city’s drainage infrastructure.

Landslides in the region have caused further casualties. In Mathgharia, a landslide buried a house, killing three members of a family; only one child was rescued alive. In Satgaon, a separate landslide resulted in the death of a 65-year-old woman. In response to these incidents, government officials have pledged compensation for victims and discussed relocating residents from perilous hillside locations to safer areas.
