Guyana advances major road and roundabout infrastructure projects

Guyana’s Ministry of Public Works is advancing several major infrastructure projects aimed at improving national transport corridors.

At the Soesdyke Junction, heavy groundworks for a new roundabout are scheduled to begin on September 9. The project is designed to link the East Bank Demerara corridor with the Soesdyke-Linden Highway to reduce congestion and enhance safety. Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill has issued a final two-week removal notice to local vendors, though the ministry stated that a paved tarmac will be constructed to serve as a designated relocation space for affected businesses. Initial works will also prioritize drainage enhancements to address flooding in the Hill Foot area.

Separately, the ministry has issued a request for bids to rehabilitate the 27.1-kilometer Mahaica to Abary Bridge Road Corridor on the East Coast of Demerara. Funded in part by the World Bank through the Integrated Transport Corridors Project, the upgrade will transform the stretch into a dual carriageway with paved shoulders. The contract includes the construction of several concrete bridges and extensive drainage systems, with an expected completion timeline of 36 months.
