Guyana receives first group of US deportees under new migration deal
Guyana has begun receiving its first group of deportees from the United States under a new one-year migration cooperation framework. The initial group, consisting of six Cuban and Afghan nationals, arrived in Guyana after being vetted and found to have no criminal records. The individuals were removed from the U.S. primarily due to immigration-related issues.
Under the agreement, the deportees are participating in the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Assisted Voluntary Return Programme. They will remain in Guyana while their immigration status is determined, with the possibility of returning to their home countries or relocating elsewhere. The arrangement is temporary and does not constitute permanent resettlement.
The United States is responsible for the costs of the relocation process. The IOM will manage the program and cover expenses related to housing, support, and integration services, including access to legal representatives and family communication. The Guyanese government has stated it will not bear the financial costs of the housing or support for the group and retains the right to review and reject any individuals proposed for relocation.
