Guyana agriculture ministry targets hotel-farmer linkages and livestock support

Guyana’s Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, is spearheading initiatives to strengthen the connection between local agricultural producers and the nation’s expanding hospitality sector. The government aims to create more predictable markets for farmers by aligning production with the specific quality, food safety, and packaging standards required by hotels. This coordination is intended to provide hotels with a consistent supply of fresh local produce while encouraging farmers to invest in irrigation, greenhouse technology, and machinery.

In separate engagements with livestock farmers on the East Coast of Demerara, Minister Mustapha addressed operational challenges including pasture land accessibility, drainage and irrigation issues, and the need for hygienic facilities for drying fish. The Ministry has committed to reviewing these concerns through technical agencies to identify rapid interventions. The government intends to coordinate with other cabinet agencies to resolve constraints affecting the livestock sector and ensure agricultural lands remain productive to meet rising demand for meat and milk.
