Guyana considers Swedish microgrid model to combat power blackouts
Guyana faces a persistent energy crisis characterized by frequent blackouts and an aging, overstretched power grid, despite the nation's significant oil wealth and status as a major global oil producer.
To address these reliability issues, attention is turning toward microgrid technology being pioneered in Lund, Sweden. Swedish entrepreneur Jonas Birgersson and his company, ViaEuropa, are developing decentralized networks of small, local microgrids. Unlike a centralized grid that is vulnerable to single points of failure, these microgrids can generate, store, and share power independently.
The Swedish model, which uses solar power and battery storage to link buildings together, has already been implemented in commercial and residential complexes. This networking approach to electricity aims to ensure that if one node fails, the rest of the network remains operational.
